The ATIEL & UEIL Joint Sustainability Committee (JSC) is proud to announce the successful re-certification of its Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Calculation Methodology for lubricants, greases, and other specialties by TÜV Rheinland Energy GmbH, marking a continued commitment to scientific rigour, transparency, and industry-wide harmonisation.
Originally certified in 2024, the methodology has rapidly become a cornerstone for sustainability reporting in the lubricants sector. Its re-certification confirms that the approach remains aligned with internationally recognised standards, including ISO 14067:2018 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard:2011, and reflects the latest developments in environmental science and industry practice.
The ATIEL and UEIL methodology provides a harmonised framework for calculating PCFs across the value chain, enabling lubricant manufacturers and stakeholders to assess and reduce greenhouse gas emissions with consistency and credibility. Since its first publishing in September 2023, the methodology has been downloaded extensively and is increasingly being adopted by companies seeking to align their internal practices with the lubricant industry guide. Many are now planning for third-party verification of their company PCF calculations, further strengthening trust and transparency across the sector.
Mattia Adani, President of UEIL, commented: “This renewed certification confirms the strength of our methodology, which – supported by leading European associations such as ELGI and UKLA – is driving a shared vision for a more sustainable future. By uniting the sector behind a common, science-based framework, we are laying the foundation for real, measurable progress in reducing emissions and building trust across the entire value chain ”
Marco Digioia, President of ATIEL, added: “We are proud to see our joint methodology continue to serve as a benchmark for environmental responsibility. The re-certification confirms the robustness of the methodology and ensures that our guidance remains relevant and responsive to the evolving needs of the industry”
The JSC remains dedicated to continuous improvement. The methodology has undergone updates to reflect emerging regulatory requirements, technological advancements, and feedback from industry stakeholders. This iterative approach ensures that the PCF framework remains fit for purpose and adaptable to future developments. The updated and re-certified methodology enables for continued alignment with methodologies from adjacent industries, thus strengthening the reporting and claims across lubricant value chains.
The re-certified methodology is available for reading and download here: ATIEL & UEIL PCF Methodology. Additional supporting tools, including the PCF Calculation Tool, are available for download via the ATIEL and UEIL websites.
