Dr. Raj Shah, Director of Koehler Instrument Company, has received the National Lubricating Grease Institute’s prestigious Achievement Award in recognition of his longstanding contributions to grease technology and the wider international lubricants industry.
Presented during NLGI’s Annual Meeting in Palm Springs, California, the Achievement Award is the Institute’s highest individual honour. It recognises exceptional service to NLGI together with a significant body of work in lubricating greases, testing, education and industry development.
Dr. Shah’s career has extended across fuels, lubricants, greases, tribology, petroleum testing and analytical instrumentation. A recurring theme has been the need to connect scientific research and international standards with the practical requirements of manufacturers, formulators and quality-control laboratories.
“The lubricants industry is international by nature,” Dr. Shah said. “A test method, technical paper or laboratory instrument developed in one part of the world may ultimately help a formulator, manufacturer or laboratory thousands of miles away.”
Over the course of his career, Dr. Shah has authored or co-authored more than 850 technical publications and has edited or co-edited six books. His major editorial contributions include the NLGI Lubricating Grease Guide and ASTM’s Fuels and Lubricants Handbooks, together with specialised publications addressing grease technology, tribology, sustainability, nanotechnology, electric mobility and formulation science.
These works have helped engineers, scientists and industrial practitioners understand changing performance requirements, testing procedures and emerging technologies across the lubricants value chain.
At Koehler Instrument Company, Dr. Shah has spent nearly three decades supporting the design and international use of analytical laboratory instruments for petroleum products, fuels, lubricants and greases. His work has involved technical development, customer support, standards activities and collaboration with laboratories and distribution partners across Europe, Asia, the Americas and other regions.
Dr. Shah holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University and serves as an Adjunct Professor at Stony Brook University. His professional qualifications include Chartered Engineer, Chartered Chemist, Chartered Scientist and Chartered Petroleum Engineer, as well as Certified Professional Chemist and Certified Chemical Engineer.
He is an elected Fellow of numerous scientific and engineering organisations, including NLGI, ASTM International, the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, the American Oil Chemists’ Society, the Energy Institute, the Institute of Physics, the Chartered Management Institute, the Institute of Measurement and Control and the Institution of Chemical Engineers.
Despite the breadth of the recognition, Dr. Shah described the award in characteristically modest terms.
“Grease works quietly, carries the load and rarely receives much attention,” he said. “This honour belongs equally to the many people and organisations that continue to share knowledge and move our industry forward.”
