UKLA regrets to announce the passing of Edward ‘Eddie’ Hateley, former UEIL President, in December 2024.
Born in May 1935, Eddie (a long-term resident of Sutton Coldfield in the West Midlands) was a Director of Birmingham-based Edgar Vaughan & Company Ltd, latterly Houghton Vaughan PLC.
He served on the Board of the BLF from 1993 to 2000 as Vice-President, Honorary Treasurer and Vice-President for Long-Term Planning. He also led the association’s representation to UEIL over many years and was a Board Member of UEIL.
In 1998 Eddie was elected to the role of President of UEIL, succeeding Dr Manfred Fuchs, and led the European Lubricants association of 300 companies representing a 30% share of the European lubricants market. In that role, his fluency in French and Spanish, his charm and pragmatism, as well as his clarity of purpose, were used to great effect.
Importantly, he mentored several other UK representatives to UEIL including Tim Bates, Hugh Dowding and Peter Vickers.
