Mobil™ uses WindEnergy Hamburg 2022 to showcase its vision for the future of wind turbine lubrication

‘Lubrication-as-a-Service’ developments, delivered in collaboration with sensor technology provider, Poseidon Systems, aim to help enhance predictive maintenance

ExxonMobil appeared at WindEnergy Hamburg 2022 to showcase its range of bespoke lubricants and services for the wind energy sector, including lubrication solutions with the ambition to make ‘fill-for-life’ a reality. The Mobil team presented several innovations in the field of predictive maintenance, including a new collaboration with Poseidon Systems, a leading provider of wind turbine sensors, on ‘Lubrication-as-a-Service’ developments.

“The wind industry is a key player in the energy transition, so it’s essential that OEMs, operators and service professionals have the tools they need to enhance turbine efficiency and output,” said Conor Wilkinson, EMEA Commercial Brand Manager, ExxonMobil Fuels & Lubricants. “By collaborating with Poseidon Systems, we are adding real-time oil condition monitoring to our range of Mobil-branded solutions – all designed to help the wind industry optimise operations, output and safety levels.”

“Oil changes and wind turbine maintenance are time-consuming, expensive and potentially hazardous operations, especially out at sea,” said Stephen Steen, Vice President for Sales and Marketing, Poseidon Systems. “Our collaboration with ExxonMobil will allow turbine operators and service providers to monitor lubricant and machinery performance between maintenance intervals, helping them identify and address any issues at the earliest opportunity.”

ExxonMobil’s latest range of advanced Mobil™ synthetic oils and greases engineered to enhance turbine availability were all on show at Wind Energy Hamburg. These included Mobil SHC™ Gear 320 WT, the world’s first gearbox lubricant certified by DNV-GL to not contribute to the oil-related effects of white etching cracking (WEC). The company also launched its new Mobil Xtra™ WT Series range of top treat solutions, formulated to help prevent challenging change-outs of wind turbine gear oil, and Mobil™ Flush 320, a new cost-effective flushing oil. The Mobil team also gave attendees a sneak preview of Mobil SHC™ Grease 68 IPC, a wind turbine grease developed to protect individual pitch control bearings against fretting corrosion, even in harsh weather conditions.
