  • ATIEL & UEIL Joint Sustainability Committee Re-Certifies Groundbreaking PCF Methodology with TÜV Rheinland

    The ATIEL & UEIL Joint Sustainability Committee (JSC) is proud to announce the successful re-certification of its Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Calculation Methodology for lubricants, greases, and other specialties by TÜV Rheinland Energy GmbH, marking a continued commitment to scientific rigour, transparency, and industry-wide harmonisation.

    Originally certified in 2024, the methodology has rapidly become a cornerstone for sustainability reporting in the lubricants sector. Its re-certification confirms that the approach remains aligned with internationally recognised standards, including ISO 14067:2018 and the GHG Protocol Product Standard:2011, and reflects the latest developments in environmental science and industry practice.

  • Obituary: Dr Pieter Tjan

    Dr Pieter Tjan, formerly President of ATIEL passed away on 16th October 2025.

    After studying for a PHD in Chemical Engineering at Technical University Delft in the Netherlands, Peter a Dutch national, joined Shell holding a number of managerial and commercial roles spanning a 25 year career that saw appointments in the UK, Europe and Asia.

    He retired from Shell in 2001 and established Europia; a lobbying consultancy working with clients such as ExxonMobil and Royal Dutch Shell.

    In 2011, Peter was appointed as President of ATIEL and was instrumental in modernising the organisation and establishing the subsidiary SAIL to monitor and manage compliance against the ACEA engine oil sequences. In 2015 Peter was also appointed Chairman of the Coordinating European Council.

    Peter stepped down from his role with ATIEL in 2017, handing over to current President Marco Digioia, and began studying for a degree.

  • SAIL Introduces New Transparency Measure for Non-Responsive LoC Scheme Participants

    SAIL Europe, in cooperation with ATIEL and the EELQMS Letter of Conformance (LoC) scheme, has announced the introduction of a new transparency measure designed to strengthen accountability, protect lubricant quality, and reinforce confidence in the industry.

    Under the updated procedure, SAIL will publish details on its website (www.sail-europe.eu) of lubricants that fail independent quality testing where the responsible LoC scheme participant has not responded after multiple reminders.

    The ATIEL & UEIL Joint Sustainability Committee, in collaboration with an independent consultant Carbon Minds, has conducted an in-depth analysis of various PCF guidelines, including those from UEIL/ATIEL, Catena-X, TfS, and API. This white paper highlights the similarities and addresses the differences between these methodologies and advocates for the acceptance of sector specific methodologies across the value chain.

  • ATIEL and UEIL Announce the Establishment of the Circular Materials Working Group

    On 26th of March, during the ATIEL UEIL Joint Sustainability Committee in-person meeting in Brussels, ATIEL and UEIL established the formation of the Circular Materials Working Group. This new working group joins the existing Carbon Footprint, Downstream Working, and Communications Working Groups.

    The Circular Materials Working Group will support the lubricants industry by focusing on key aspects of circular materials, such as the use of re-refined base oils (RRBO) and other circular or renewable materials in lubricants.

  • ATIEL releases Code of Practice Issue 25 further to the publication of the ACEA Oil Sequences 2024 for Heavy Duty Vehicles

    ATIEL, the Technical Association of the European Lubricants Industry, has released Issue 25 of its Code of Practice, that provides guidelines for the development of engine oils which meet the latest European ACEA specifications.

    ACEA 2024 specifications updated the Heavy-Duty Sequences. Published in October 2024 as the successor for the 2022 ACEA Heavy-Duty oil sequences, their most significant change was the introduction of a new engine oil category F01, which has specific viscosity requirements in comparison to E11-24 oil specifications.

  • Global Industry Response to 2023 WBCSD Guidance on Avoided Emissions

    ATIEL and UEIL have recently co-signed a letter which was sent to the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), in response to their 2023 Guidance on Avoided Emissions.   • ATIEL and UEIL Announce the Establishment of a Joint Sustainability Committee

    On 13th June 2024, ATIEL and UEIL established the formation of the ‘ATIEL & UEIL Joint Sustainability Committee’.

    Having previously worked closely together on the ‘Methodology for Product Carbon Footprint Calculations for Lubricants and Other Specialities’, the inaugural meeting held in Brussels formally brings together the ATIEL Sustainability and the UEIL Sustainability Committees.

    The purpose of the Joint Sustainability Committee is to work on matters of mutual interest related to environmental and legislative drivers, including but not limited to the European Green Deal.

    The Joint Sustainability Committee, chaired by Markus Garb (UEIL) and co-chaired by Mika Kettunen (ATIEL), will focus initially on Product and Corporate Carbon Footprint, Lubricant Use-Phase (including Avoided Emissions), End-of-Life (including Circularity) and Eco-Design for Sustainable Products.

  • ATIEL releases Code of Practice issue 23 further to the publication of the ACEA sequences 2022 for Heavy Duty Vehicles

    ATIEL, the technical association of the European Lubricants Industry, has released Issue 23 of its Code of Practice, that provides guidelines for the development of engine oils that meet the latest European ACEA specifications. As of 15 December 2022, Issue 23 of the Code of Practice supersedes Issue 22.
