  SAIL Europe, in cooperation with ATIEL and the EELQMS Letter of Conformance (LoC) scheme, has announced the introduction of a new transparency measure designed to strengthen accountability, protect lubricant quality, and reinforce confidence in the industry.

  Under the updated procedure, SAIL will publish details on its website (www.sail-europe.eu) of lubricants that fail independent quality testing where the responsible LoC scheme participant has not responded after multiple reminders.

• UNITI and VSI associations decide to merge and represent around 95 per cent of the lubricants market with their member companies in future

  

  The member companies of UNITI Bundesverband EnergieMittelstand e.V. and Verband der Schmierstoff-Industrie e.V. (VSI) have voted unanimously in favour of a fusion of the two associations at their respective general assembly meetings. In future, the merger will represent around 95 per cent of the lubricants market in Germany and a large part of the European market. This paves the way for a future-oriented alliance that combines the technological expertise of the lubricants industry with the market competence of the fuels, combustibles and lubricants trade.

• ATIEL releases Code of Practice Issue 25 further to the publication of the ACEA Oil Sequences 2024 for Heavy Duty Vehicles

  

  ATIEL, the Technical Association of the European Lubricants Industry, has released Issue 25 of its Code of Practice, that provides guidelines for the development of engine oils which meet the latest European ACEA specifications.

  ACEA 2024 specifications updated the Heavy-Duty Sequences. Published in October 2024 as the successor for the 2022 ACEA Heavy-Duty oil sequences, their most significant change was the introduction of a new engine oil category F01, which has specific viscosity requirements in comparison to E11-24 oil specifications.

• Aztec Oils Ltd – Trade remedies authority application accepted

  UK-based lubricant manufacturing company, Aztec Oils, has announced that their application for an investigation into the dumping of lubricants on the UK market has been accepted by the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), a British government agency that exists to defend the UK against unfair international trade practices. Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Aztec Oils identified significant and increasing quantities of lubricants originating from the UAE and Lithuania sold at prices well below both manufacturing and import costs.

• Developing the circular economy for lubricants in Europe: TotalEnergies Acquires Tecoil, a lubricant used oil regeneration specialist

  TotalEnergies has announced the acquisition of Tecoil, a Finnish company specialised in the production of Re-Refined Base Oils (RRBOs), which has the most efficient used oil regeneration process on the market today.

  Tecoil currently operates a production facility of 50,000 tons of RRBOs per year in Hamina, in eastern Finland. Tecoil has developed its own circular economy network for collecting used lubricants in Europe and supplying its plant.

  On 13th June 2024, ATIEL and UEIL established the formation of the ‘ATIEL & UEIL Joint Sustainability Committee’.

  Having previously worked closely together on the ‘Methodology for Product Carbon Footprint Calculations for Lubricants and Other Specialities’, the inaugural meeting held in Brussels formally brings together the ATIEL Sustainability and the UEIL Sustainability Committees.

  The purpose of the Joint Sustainability Committee is to work on matters of mutual interest related to environmental and legislative drivers, including but not limited to the European Green Deal.

  The Joint Sustainability Committee, chaired by Markus Garb (UEIL) and co-chaired by Mika Kettunen (ATIEL), will focus initially on Product and Corporate Carbon Footprint, Lubricant Use-Phase (including Avoided Emissions), End-of-Life (including Circularity) and Eco-Design for Sustainable Products.

  We are sad to announce that David Neadle, former UKLA President (2003-2005), sadly passed away on 1st January 2023.

  David was a UKLA Board Member 1994-2009 and Chairman of the Metalworking Fluid Product Stewardship group until 2011. He was a founder member in 1968 of the British Lubricant Federation which subsequently merged in 2005 with the UK Delegation to UEIL to become the UKLA which we know today.
